How to Get the Most Out of a New Fitness Class

Updated: May 31

Trying a new fitness studio for the first time can be intimidating and stressful. But on the other side of the studio door could be your new favorite workout, supportive community, and bright spot in your day.  Read on for tips on how to find your new favorite studio, how to make the most of your first class, and how to support their small business once you find your new home!

New Fitness Class Tips: BEFORE YOU GO

Before going to any new fitness class, here are a few things you can do to make sure you're more prepared — and so that you're more comfortable and ready to focus on the activity at hand when you show up on your first day:

  • Find out what to wear. Call or email the studio, check their website, or send them a quick DM on Instagram to ask about what to wear. At The Bar Method, we recommend leggings and a comfortable top, and we require socks in class. Grippy socks can be purchased at our studio, which is the best for success during planks and push-ups, but regular socks are also fine!

  • Do you need special equipment? At The Bar Method, we provide all other equipment, like mats, weights, balls, and sliders for your use. If you’re going to a spin class, do they provide clip-in shoes? If you’re trying dance cardio, do you need sneakers and/or a yoga mat? The studio wants to help you be prepared - don’t be afraid to ask!

  • Find out studio policies on late canceling, no-shows, and late entry to class. Some studios charge a fee for a missed reservation, and most will not permit late entry to a class past a certain time, however, they will usually waive these rules if you reach out ahead of time so they can fill your spot in class.

New Fitness Class Tips: THE DAY OF CLASS

When it's time to go to your first yoga, Pilates, barre, boxing, or other fitness class, here are a few steps you can take to set yourself up for fun, a great workout, and optimal success:

  • Arrive at the studio early to fill out any waivers or paperwork they require for new clients. At The Bar Method, we will greet you at the door, introduce you to your instructor, and show you where to change. We will also show you to the classroom, where to gather the equipment you’ll need, and where to sit in the classroom to get the best experience.

  • Meet your instructor, and let them know about any injuries you might have, or health conditions such as pregnancy, and ask if there are any modifications you might need to perform the exercises safely. A good instructor will ask about this ahead of time and give you the proper guidance!

  • Leave your cell phone in your locker. We know it’s tough to separate but you’ll be able to listen to instructions and important safety cues without distraction and be fully present with your body and mind. Take the opportunity to unplug!

New Fitness Class Tips: AFTER CLASS

Once you're done with your first fitness class, here are a few follow-up activities that can help you get the most out of your new practice:

  • Let them know how much you enjoyed it if you loved this instructor and this new place blew your mind! Ask if they have any unlimited specials for new clients. The best way to get a feel for a studio is to come as often as you can, try different teachers, class formats, and times of day.

  • Bring your friends! Maybe this is something you could do together and motivate each other to stick with it.

  • Make a plan and stick to it! Plan out your week of classes and map it out with timing for transportation. Try a few different options and see what works best so that you can build a routine.

  • Post on social media or write them a good review. Fitness studios are small businesses run by passionate people and it’s a tough business in New York City. Sharing your feedback and posting about them helps them to keep going and grow!

Going to a new fitness studio can feel intimidating, but it can be a great way to meet new friends and find a place that feels like your home away from home for self-care. Set yourself up for success by getting there early with the right gear, and share any health concerns so that you can get a personalized and meaningful experience.

These professionals are just waiting for someone like you to walk through the door and experience the magic they worked so hard to create. Go in and try it!
